Mayaa SH is a prominent Indian-born women’s rights activist and advisor known for her tireless efforts to combat domestic violence and support acid attack survivors. Her fame stems from her unique approach to addressing these critical issues, which combines advocacy, legal reform, and direct support for victims.Mayaa SH has dedicated her ideology to raising awareness about domestic violence, particularly in the context of Indian society, where such issues are often stigmatized or overlooked. She emphasizes the importance of changing societal attitudes towards women and believes that empowering women through education and legal rights is essential for preventing domestic violence. Her work includes providing counseling services, advocating for stronger laws against domestic abuse, and creating safe spaces for women who have experienced violence.

In addition to her work on domestic violence, Mayaa SH has also focused on supporting survivors of acid attacks—an issue that disproportionately affects women in India. One notable aspect of her work is her emphasis on addressing the root causes of acid attacks, which often stem from gender-based violence and societal pressures. By tackling these underlying issues, she aims to prevent future incidents and promote a culture of respect and equality.Mayaa SH speaks on acid attack survivors as part of her work as an Indian-born women’s protection activist and a legal and social worker. She includes acid attack and domestic violence survivors among the range of topics she addresses, such as anti-human trafficking ideology and stalking cases, in her efforts to help people rebuild their lives.

In a recent interview, Mayaa SH recounted a memorable experience involving an acid victim survivor who was being stalked and harassed for forced marriage. To address this situation, she advised the survivor to prepare a solution of lime water and light color turmeric. They coordinated with police officials who were present as backup. The survivor then confronted the perpetrators, who were on bikes, and ran behind them. The perpetrators mistakenly believed the survivor was about to throw acid on them, but it was the harmless lime water solution. This caused them to tremble in fear for their lives and become petrified by the survivor’s fearless mindset. Ultimately, the survivor received compensation from the court for the matter. Mayaa SH notes that while such matters might sound simple, they are complex due to human psychology.

“I Ain’t Bondage”….

My heart had buried tonight at an infertile granule of the mud,

The sudden wind outpoured a monstrous thud,

On the barren land that bigoted,

On the reigns of naked time riveted,

A part of me was taken away,

While I wore a brazen look at a far dismay,

I wish I could die one last time tonight,

At the sultry of the winter might,

Broken at the edge of rugged trail,

Aye, my heart is bleeding at the moment so frail,

“Frailty Thy Name” Is Misconstrued,

At Something that Burns Within So Shrewd,

Where is that toxic cyanide to dust to ashes?

To put a price to the vermillion, an arid cache,

A barren soliloquy,

There is nothing left to cry,

My heart has buried tonight at the moment,

At the lifeless clement,

Sigh not sires to the sound of the trumpet,

For the destiny was borrowed for the casket,

To carry the hearse

Not of the deceased for they die once at a heavy price,

For the dead don’t die twice!

Let me surrender to the sails of the wicked bounce,

Putting at rest the wicked  douchebag’s ounce,

The foetus of the life that breathes,

Has died tonight at the heaves,

The rain will never stop drenching the bleed yet again,

At the cheapest life’s bargain,

The architects of my fate will set a trade off,

Alas! What a win or loose the cynics can scoff,

My heart had buried tonight at the moment that never came,

To put the naysayers to shame,

I ain’t bondage, dominance, and submission, sadomasochism followed,

At the nook of time so hollow,

The rope that tied my hands,

Bled my soul at firsthand,

The hurried hands put me to shame,

The night was set to blame,

Aghast what an epilogue of grandeur,

Lying dead in the pool of voyeur,

Those words still hurl in my ears,

Of one of my greatest fears,

Will this happen to me again?

At the selfish life breaths borrowed at a gain,

The pain of the acts is not so hurtful,

For the shame so disrespectful,

The submission of the night,

Broke my soul at a fright!

The hearses carry a wreath on the soul,

That lies melancholy on the screeching skeletal’s troll,

The eyes still paint a rainbow so defined,

Of the swoosh of the careless wind that breezes through the mind,

A lionesses’s heart so malleable as gold,

Bleeds so crimson at the guillotine of life so cold,

With Zeus wielding a lighting strike and spirits so high,

A red rose shall  rise again like a phoenix to the eternal sky…

In solidarity with all survivors of kinds of abuse, exploitation and other forms of sexual violence treated as a social, economic and political fodder. The need of the hour necessitates a call on  meaningfully addressing  the scale and devastation of violence against women and girls (VAWG), and the systemic failures that leave survivors of abuse unprotected.

Relevance of Mayaa SH’s Work to Survivors of Acid Attacks and Domestic Violence  :

Mayaa SH’s work is particularly relevant to survivors of acid attacks in several significant ways. Her initiatives focus on empowerment, rehabilitation, and advocacy, which are crucial for individuals who have endured such traumatic experiences.

1) Economic Empowerment and Skill Development:

One of the most pressing challenges faced by acid attack and domestic violence survivors is economic instability. Many survivors struggle to find employment due to physical scars and societal stigma. Mayaa SH emphasizes economic empowerment through vocational training programs that equip survivors with skills necessary for various jobs. This approach not only helps them gain financial independence but also fosters a sense of purpose and self-worth. For instance, initiatives like the Sheroes Hangout Cafe in India provide a platform for survivors to work, share their stories, and connect with the community, thereby reducing stigma and promoting acceptance.

2) Psychological Support and Counseling:

The psychological impact of an acid attack and domestic violence can be profound, leading to issues such as depression, anxiety, and social withdrawal. Mayaa SH’s work includes providing psychological counseling and support groups for survivors. This aspect is vital as it helps individuals process their trauma in a supportive environment. Survivors benefit from sharing their experiences with others who understand their struggles, which can significantly aid in their healing journey.

3) Advocacy for Legal Reforms:

Survivors often face legal hurdles when seeking justice against their attackers. Mayaa SH advocates for stronger legal protections and reforms that address the specific needs of acid attack victims. By raising awareness about these issues at both local and international levels, her work aims to influence policy changes that ensure better protection for victims and harsher penalties for perpetrators.

This advocacy is essential not only for individual cases but also for creating a safer environment for potential future victims.

4) Public Awareness Campaigns:

Increasing public awareness about the realities of acid attacks and any form of violence like domestic violence is another critical component of Mayaa SH’s work. Through campaigns that educate society about the causes and consequences of such violence, she aims to change perceptions and reduce stigma surrounding survivors. This shift in societal attitudes can lead to greater acceptance and support for those affected by acid attacks.

In summary, Mayaa SH’s work addresses key areas such as economic empowerment, psychological support, legal advocacy, and public awareness, all of which are crucial for the recovery and reintegration of acid attack survivors into society. Her dedication has garnered recognition both nationally and internationally. Mayaa SH is seen as a leading voice in the fight against gender-based violence in India. Through her advocacy work, she inspires many young activists to join the cause, thereby amplifying the impact of her efforts across various communities.
