Inside CITTA’s Design Story: Skincare Packaging Rooted in Indian Textiles
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Walk into any Indian home with a grandmother’s cupboard still in use, and you’ll find yourself walking down memory lane. A Banarasi saree reserved for weddings, a Kantha quilt stitched from old saris, a hand-tied Bandhani dupatta. These pieces were never just cloth. They were stories, passed down, worn, and eventually inherited. It is this same instinct that an object can carry meaning far beyond its function that shapes the packaging philosophy behind CITTA. Best known for its ceramide moisturizers and hair growth serums, this Pune-based personal care brand deserves just as much attention for its thoughtful design language. Spend a few minutes with the range, and it becomes clear that CITTA has quietly turned its packaging into something closer to a cultural archive.

Packaging has long been treated as an afterthought in skincare, a shell built to protect the formula inside and that’s it. In recent years, however, that mindset has changed. As shoppers grow more discerning and shelves grow more crowded, packaging has become one of the few places where a brand can say something about who it is before a single product is used. Increasingly, that “something” is being drawn not from trend forecasts but from craft traditions that predate the category itself. CITTA’s approach sits squarely in this shift, treating the outside of the bottle with the same intention reserved for the formula inside.

CITTA’s packaging draws inspiration from India’s diverse states, celebrating the textiles, prints, and art forms of different regions. Every skincare range is thoughtfully paired with a craft whose history and symbolism reflect the product’s purpose, creating a meaningful connection between heritage and skincare. Rather than using Indian crafts as decorative elements, the brand weaves their colors, patterns, and stories into the packaging itself. The result is a collection where every bottle represents a different corner of India, turning the range into a visual journey through the country’s rich artistic traditions.

The Barrier Repair range, built around ceramides and calming actives, borrows the delicate white-on-white embroidery of Lucknow’s Chikankari, a craft long associated with softness and gentle restoration. The Brightening range takes its cue from Rajasthan’s Leheriya, whose flowing tie-dye patterns naturally evoke radiance.

Similarly, CITTA’s Hydration range is inspired by Pichwai art, the richly detailed devotional paintings of Rajasthan traditionally associated with water and abundance. The Acnecare range borrows from Kantha embroidery of West Bengal, a centuries-old craft rooted in mending and renewal, making it a fitting reflection of skin recovery after acne. The Regenerative range features Kashmir’s intricate Kashida embroidery, while the Premium Anti-Ageing collection takes inspiration from Maharashtra’s heirloom Paithani weave, long admired for its timeless elegance. The Gluta-Smart range celebrates the geometric precision of Toda embroidery from Tamil Nadu, and the Anti-Tan range draws from Gujarat’s Bandhani, a craft deeply associated with resilience and protection.

The storytelling continues into more targeted products, like the eye cream, symbolized by Jaipur’s iconic Blue Pottery; the brow serum, by the fine detailing of Karnataka’s Kasuti work; and the sleeping mask, by the shimmering richness of Banarasi silk. CITTA’s body care leans on the bold, grounding motifs of Kalamkari block printing, while the hair care range draws its geometry from India’s stepwells and temple architecture, structures built for strength and symmetry, not unlike the roots they are named for.

Every design choice serves a purpose beyond aesthetics. Each textile or art form reflects the product’s purpose, giving every package a story that feels authentic and unmistakably Indian. Today’s consumers appreciate packaging with meaning, and CITTA offers more than just a pretty design. It celebrates the country’s cultural heritage while making every product feel thoughtful, distinctive, and deeply rooted in India.

CITTA’s packaging is far more than a visual identity for its product range. It is a conscious attempt to bring together heritage and modern skincare science, treating each bottle as both a functional object and a small tribute to India’s rich heritage. In an industry that is often accused of chasing novelty for its own sake, CITTA offers something refreshing that feels like a genuinely original idea, one rooted in tradition but with a modern perspective.
